A workshop designed to introduce participants to the foundational elements of Odissi dance, blending strength, grace, and rhythm.
Day 1: Rooted in Strength and Elegance (2 hours)
Bhumi Pranam and Body Conditioning
• Introduction and Bhumi Pranam
• Overview of Odissi dance and its cultural significance.
• Step-by-step practice of Bhumi Pranam (Earth Salutation) focusing on reverence, grounding, and fluidity.
• Body Conditioning Exercises
• Warm-up for flexibility, core strength, and balance
• Exercises targeting thighs, hips, and arms (essential for Chauka and Tribhangi)
The Dual Essence – Strength and Grace
• Chauka: The Pillar of Strength
Breakdown of the Chauka posture
Focus on alignment, strength, and stability
• Tribhangi: The Poetry of Graceful Curves
Breakdown of the Tribhangi posture
Emphasize fluidity and graceful curves through head, torso, and hip alignment
Day 2: Grace in Motion (2 hours)
Mudras, Padas, and Bhedas
Breakdown, practice and meaning of
• Mudras (Hand Gestures)
• Padas (Foot Positions)
• Bhedas (Head and Neck Movements)
• Shiro Bhedas (Head Movements)
• Griva Bhedas (Neck Movements)
Rhythm and Dance Sequence
Ektali and Basic Rhythm (Taal)
• Introduction to Ektali (1-beat rhythmic cycle)
• Practice simple rhythmic footwork patterns synchronized with Taal
• Arasa Dance Sequence: Emphasize precision, rhythm, and expression.

This will be held on the beautiful grounds of Krishna Yoga village where you can nourish your body and soul with additional daily yoga sessions and wholesome vegetarian meals, prepared with love and care. We are excited to invite you to our evening of sacred Odissi classical dance and kirtan.
By the grace of our Guru Monica Singh Sangwan we present
“Taruni” (blooming, charming girl)
Sunday 26th November 2023 at the Citidel, Murwillumbah.
Presenting all the blooming new dancers who
have been learning together for a year now.
We feel honoured to be joined on the night with kirtan by Janardhana Das and friends. Kalyans kitchen will be catering Indian street food so make sure you bring cash on the night!
